The Difference Between Men and Women

imageI wear glasses from the moment I get up in the morning until the moment I get in bed at night and have done so for most of the 41 years I have been married. I have had the same frames for two years. Last week I ordered a new pair.

When they came in on Monday, I rushed to the store to pick them up, excited about having something new. When I came home, I cleaned the house all afternoon, so shortly before my husband came home, I took a shower, put on some nice clothes, fixed my hair, and put make-up on, paying particular attention to my eye make-up to make my pretty new glasses stand out even more.

When my husband came home, I waited for the response that I knew would be coming. Hubby came home, gave me my hug and kiss and said…nothing. Well, yes, he did tell me about his day and asked what was for dinner. But nothing about my new glasses. We sat down at the dinner table, he across from me, as usual, and talked about our upcoming plans for the weekend and when the kids come in a few weeks, and all the while he kept staring at me. Finally, he looked at me and said (ah, here it comes, I thought), “You look very pretty tonight.” The rest of the evening was pretty much like that.

The next morning he sat across from me at breakfast, and still said nothing about my new glasses. Just before he left for work, he grabbed his lunch I had packed for him, gave me a good-bye kiss, turned to me one last time and said, “Hey, when are you going to pick up your new glasses?” The heavy sigh from me (extremely heavy) triggered his dawning realization that something was amiss. I pointed to my glasses and said, “You mean these?”

He was aghast. “I was blinded by your beauty!” When I didn’t pick up what he was putting down (as my friend Joanie likes to say), he said, “I really blew it, didn’t I?” I laughed at him because he was so remorseful and couldn’t stop saying how great my new glasses looked on me, once my beauty was no longer blinding him.

Later that morning I walked into my yoga class. One of my yoga mates, whom I see once or twice a week for a little more than an hour, looked at me and said, “Love your new glasses.”

About Coming East

I am a writer, wife, mother, and grandmother who thinks you're never too old until you're dead. My inspiration is Grandma Moses who became a successful artist in her late 70's. If I don't do something pretty soon, though, I'll have to find someone older for inspiration.

Sounds like our husbands are very much alike. My husband rarely notices my haircuts. I like how George covered his mistake, “I was blinded by your beauty!” Sweet man!

It has to be a gender thing, of course- it will be days before I notice my husband has a new haircut. I blame it on my eyes…I need glasses 😉 LOL! Great post!

“I was blinded by your beauty!” — how sweet of George!
    Love the post, Susan 😀

Women notice everything. Men notice nothing.

Maybe George needs glasses? 😉 It’s the other way around at our house. I get asked, “Is that a new blouse?”
“No, I just haven’t worn it since last summer.”
Maybe he doesn’t see if because of my glaring beauty. Or the shine on my nose…
I’ll have to see what Dianna and Al had to say in their earlier posts.

Priceless. lol I physically laughed-out-loud reading this. 🙂

  7. Huffygirl says:

Yes, that just about sums it up.

  8. I think we’re all married to the same man…hahaha! The other day I sent my husband a text that read “My surgery is at 1:30 today.” Now, it was just a minor office procedure that has been written in bold on the calendar for WEEKS. The response was “Am I being tested? If so, I think I failed.” I could not stop laughing.

Funny, funny comment, LWTTD! Are you sure your husband’s name isn’t George?

      • LWTTD and Coming East, My mother always told us, all men are alike they just have different faces so that we can know ours from the others She was so right…. I have been there and have done that. I am certain your glasses are beautiful. DAF

Hysterical comment by your mother, DAF. I got a big kick out of it. I have to say these glasses aren’t my favorite, tough they are nice. I just liked the way the felt on my face.

I read your post this morning over breakfast before going off to “work” at an office where I volunteer my time. The office manager, Sharon, had on glasses I hadn’t seen and I asked her, “Did you get new glasses?” She had. I told her I probably noticed because I had read your post, but she said I noticed the last time she got new glasses, too. So I may be the exception to your rule. Muri has often speculated that I got an extra X chromosome.

My husband notices change on rare occasions. In fact, so much time goes by that when he does notice something I lapse into stunned silence. You have a good one there Susan. He had a vague feeling something was different so he covered by saying, “You look very pretty.” Good man, your George. 🙂

My problem is my husband notices EVERYTHING and somehow thinks he has to make comments/compliments ALL the time! He is ever so gracious and appreciative of anything I do automatically for him, like even thanking me for preparing dinner. I’m different, a more reticent person. Yesterday, he thanked me for something and I said he didn’t have to thank me. I should be more gracious. He used to help me look for my glasses all the time until I bought a new pair recently. He ‘trained’ me to put my glasses in the same place to find them. Susan, I’ve been with this same man for nearly 51 years next month! Been blogging a whole year already! Always enjoy your blogs!!! God bless you and your hubby!

I should not be reading this post. If by chance I do begin to understand the differences they laws of the universe will have to be altered. And we will have to figure the new ones out all over again. It is much easier to acknowledge pretty and ignore new bee-baubs that are invisible in the face of pretty.

  13. My husband is exactly the same. I can sport a new haircut, new glasses, new clothes … and he just doesn’t notice. Even worse, I can buy him a new shirt or new pants and put them in the closet and he’ll just reach in and pull them out and put them on and not notice that HE has new clothes (one day he came home from work and said, “Is this shirt new? It feels really stiff at the neck.” (I’d neglected to remove the cardboard from under the collar and he’d been walking around all day like that).

  14. Mine never notices a hair cut or color, let alone new glasses. Still sounds like you have a wonderful guy!
