There are some things that I just don’t get, no matter how many times someone explains them to me. People can tell me the science behind these things, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. For example, have you ever weighed yourself before you went to bed, and then weighed yourself first thing in the morning? My husband and I do that all the time, and every time we find that we are two pounds lighter in the morning. Where did those two pounds go? We didn’t exercise. We were sound asleep for eight hours. Now you may tell me the science behind it is that the body burns all those calories sleeping, but then that should mean if I eat a good breakfast in the morning (akin to eating supper in the evening before we go to sleep) and then lay down and take a long nap, I should weigh two pounds less by dinner time. But that’s not what happens. I always weigh two pounds more at the end of the day than I did first thing in the morning. And you can’t tell me sleeping burns more calories than an hour and a half of yoga and a three-mile fast walk, plus a day of housecleaning. If that were so, why aren’t doctors telling their obese patients to just go home and sleep? Anyway, that’s just one small thing that boggles my mind. Here’s a really big thing.

Last night my brother and sister-in-law FaceTimed me (it’s like Skype only easier and is for Mac users. We both have FaceTime on our iPads.) Anyway, they were at a little pub having a pint and listening to music and thought my husband and I would enjoy listening, too. Which we did. They took their iPad and turned the camera around so we could see the musicians as well as hear them, and we even got to talk to some of the patrons in the pub. They waved to us, in fact, and a few blew kisses. They raised their beer glasses in salute, and my husband, who just happened to have a beer in his hand, did the same. Everything came in pretty clearly, and we had no trouble enjoying the music. We tapped our feet and clapped our hands. We felt like we were right there with them. It was great Irish music. In Ireland. Yes, they were in Ireland and we are here in Virginia. How is that possible? Don’t bother giving me the facts because it will just be a bit of mumbo jumbo to me, but it boggles my mind.

I’m a scientist and my mind is still boggled by the technology we have in our hands for just play. For years, I saw amazing technology in the hands of the government or the military but now,everyone has access. And it also amazes me that companies have packaged this technology so that people can use it without understanding any of it. Supposedly the weight loss is water breathed out as water vapor … it would be interesting to try an eight hour nap and see if the same thing happens. Meanwhile, thank goodness for those two am pounds that let me think I’m thinner than I am.
I had never heard that about the two pounds of water vapor, Bud. Take a nap for me, will you, and tell me if it works.
This is such a cool way to be together. I skype, but have only done it at home in the quiet. I love this idea and will borrow it on outings, thanks for sharing.

Now that’s an interesting experience, almost like time travel! Hope you get a good report at your next appointment. Are you able to walk on it yet? Is George still cleaning house, or has he hired a maid service? 😉
Ha-ha, Patti. George is the maid service. Yes, I can do a little walking on it, but since I’m still wearing the boot, I can’t bend my ankle, so it’s tedious and awkward. I’m hoping for good news on Wednesday.

If you can’t afford to travel, it’s nice to have a brother who finds ways to include you vicariously, Carol. My neice, my brother’s daughter,is going to Paris next week. I wonder if she’s bringing her iPad…
I must say that losing weight sleeping boggles me more than Facetime with Ireland. I go to bed discouraged, but I wake up and my diet has worked again!

Teleportation has got to be cheaper than flights now, Eye. They are so high, we can’t afford to go anyplace unless we can drive.
I’m in total agreement with you. Like you, even knowing scientific discoveries, I still am amazed and boggled by many things… and I hope I never reach a point where I’m so filled with facts that I can’t appreciate the amazing feats, fun anecdotes and beauties of life.

As for the weight loss during the night, for me it’s peeing. And yeah, I think I pee more when I should be sleeping (but am instead in the bathroom) than during the day when I am full awake!
Ha, Val! I used to be like that, but since it has been so hard to get to the bathroom with this broken foot, I’ve trained myself to wait longer.

That is so great that your daughter can keep connected with her beau even though he’s serving overseas, DAF! I don’t think I wanted to be teleported to another planet, though. I’d be happy if I could be teleported to a great restaurant in Paris maybe.
Sounds equally good to me… I guess thinking of going to a restaurant in Paris is equal to me actually going to another planet! I think I would take Paris though, my daughters have been there and from their stories I would love to go.

It started years ago as 4 of us and we all wrote joint articles and each of us drove the cars but now it’s just lil ol’ moi. But it does mean that I get a new car every week for the whole week, sometimes longer. The name stuck throughout but it’s liberating not having to write for an editor now. I used to write for Samesame.com.au and when I say “we” now I mean the other half and I. Although he doesn’t drive, or have a license, he knows what he likes and doesn’t like. He loves the V8’s and the Peugeot RCZ and the big butch pick-ups. I’ve got a Colorardo (holden here, chevy in the USA) in a few months which he’ll love!
