Twenty-Four

24 is a TV series that stars Kiefer Sutherland as a counter terrorist agent. Each episode depicts twenty-four hours in his character’s life. I believe it ended a couple of years ago, though I think I read where it is going to be resurrected.

We have a 24 of our own going on here in our house. Twenty-four minutes. I have pleaded and cajoled for years to get my husband into some sort of exercise routine, all to no avail. For awhile, a couple of years ago, he made an effort to go to a gym around the corner from his office before he came home. He was going three times a week, then two, then one, then none. He finally cancelled his gym membership and I added him onto my YMCA one when he pledged to stop at the Y on his way home from work a few times a week. Didn’t happen. He went on a few Saturdays, but that stopped as well.

Then came the tears. Mine, not his. I told my sweet hubby I didn’t want to be a young widow. Okay, there is no danger of the young part anymore. But I tried one more serious talk about my desire…no, my overwhelming need…to have him get into some sort of exercise routine. A week later he announced that he was going to start getting up at 5:45 every weekday morning and go for a jog/walk before he went to work. I told him I was coming with him. Today is nine days in a row ( not counting the weekends), and we’re still going strong.

Our morning jog-walks only take twenty-four minutes to get us through our mapped out circuit, but I am a much happier wife now. Which means hubby is a much happier hubby.

About Coming East

I am a writer, wife, mother, and grandmother who thinks you're never too old until you're dead. My inspiration is Grandma Moses who became a successful artist in her late 70's. If I don't do something pretty soon, though, I'll have to find someone older for inspiration.

Good for both of you! Wish I could get hubby interested. I love my early morning walks…

Good for him and good for you. So it’s true what they say? “If momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

I’m so glad your hubby is making the effort to get fit.

Congratulations on a job well done, Susan! 24 minutes sounds great to me. I’ve been thinking of getting up early to jog. I wonder if I can convince my husband to join me… ?

Also wanted to let you know that I’m having trouble accessing your blog (and almost all of those who are masters of their own domain). I’ve found a way around it that seems to be working, but just wanted to be sure you knew in case you don’t see me as often (or my way around it suddenly doesn’t work).

I’m getting your comments, so maybe things are better? Just get up and start your walking or jogging, invite your hubby to join you every morning, but go even if he doesn’t, maybe he’ll finally get with the program. Hope it works out for both of you.

Congratulations on being your hubby’s inspiration. I am the one who needs inspiration here. My hubby has always made himself follow an exercise regime and he looks the part. I am very proud of him. On the other hand, I’m the one in the family who keeps failing myself. Managed two 20 minute workouts this week and it’s almost over! Help! Can you send your inspiration via the internet?

    • Coming East says:

Here is my inspiration: If you love your sweet hubby like I love mine (and I know you do!), then you would want to do everything in your power to stay sharp and healthy for as long as you can have wonderful golden years together. So think about that, Miss Dor!

Some say if you keep a new habit going for 3-6 months, it will become permanent. I’m trying the same thing with avoiding chocolate. So far I’ve restarted the new behavior every day…

    • Coming East says:

Good for your persistence, HG! Haha! But dark chocolate is actually good for you, in moderate doses. George has already informed me that once the weather gets cold in the fall, he won’t be going for our morning jogs. Maybe I can get him interested in yoga then, at least, since we can do that inside.

    • I have the same problem!!

      • Coming East says:

If you were here, the three of us would jog together. Wish you had someone to go with. Oh, wait a minute…#1 daughter will be out of school in a week. Drag her butt out of bed and make her go with you. Tell her Mimi said.

  7. Kudos to you for convincing your husband to exercise. I’ve tried begging, pleading, cajoling, and threatening mine – to no avail. Occasionally I do manage to drag him around the block (a 20 minute route) with me (we used to walk every night, then he injured his back [seriously] in 2004 and we stopped; we never quite got back into the habit), but it’s not enough. What irks me most is that he’ll (re)injure his back (though not quite as bad as the first time) or complain about some other ache or pain, yet refuse to acknowledge that a little exercise would help (he does, however, ‘congratulate’ me on sticking to my own fitness program). Men!

  8. I like the idea of 24 minutes. Good for you!
