It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I agree with you in that there are things that are protected that make me angry, but I’d rather they were protected than have the government decide what I can and cannot say/write.

The only thing that guarantees my free speech is that which guarantees the free speech of those I don’t care to hear. The Westboro folks, in particular, are horrible. But it’s not against the law to be horrible. When we hear the phrase “Freedom isn’t free,” this is part of what it means. We have to pay the price of listening to those we can’t stand in order to preserve our rights. If it weren’t for that, we may never have had the Declaration of Independence.

My husband read a book about the Appalachian Trailmwritten by someone who hiked the entire thing. After reading it, my husband lost all interest in ever walking even a part of it. Mthe book was hilarious, and the author said all you see is trees, trees, and more trees, too thick to see anything else. So I don’t think you missed too much, Patti.

I wish I’d known about the Appalachian Trail when I was young enough to enjoy hiking the entire distance. What a goal that would be, communing with nature through so many states. But now that I’m not so young, I tend to agree with you on the accommodations! Our dads were from a different era; no college for me, “Respectable women were secretaries.”
